What is hojicha?
Hojicha is Japanese green tea that has been roasted. The roast turns the leaves from green to amber brown and gives the tea a toasty, nutty flavor without the bitterness of unroasted green tea.
Is hojicha powder the same as matcha?
No. Both are Japanese green tea powders, but matcha is shade-grown and never roasted, so it is vivid green and vegetal. Hojicha is roasted before it is ground, so it is brown, toasty and lower in caffeine.
Does hojicha have caffeine?
A little. Roasting lowers the caffeine, so hojicha is naturally low in caffeine and much gentler than matcha or coffee. It is an easy cup in the afternoon or evening.
How many drinks does a 30 g bag make?
About 15 lattes, at 2 g (1 teaspoon) of hojicha powder each.
How do I make a hojicha latte?
Whisk 1 teaspoon (about 2 g) of hojicha powder with 60 ml (2 oz) of water at 175°F (80°C) until smooth, then add 180 ml (6 oz) of steamed milk. For an iced latte, pour it over ice and cold milk instead.
How should I store hojicha powder?
Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Once opened, store it in the refrigerator and use it within a few weeks for peak freshness.
